So You Bought a Plant… Now What?

An assortment if potted plants, an air plant, and a Rooted spray bottle staged on cinderblocks in front of a beige curtain.

So, you just ordered a plant and now you’re wondering what you got yourself into. Don’t panic. This is kind of like a first date—you’re excited, a little nervous, and trying really hard not to mess things up. Totally normal. Luckily, we’ve got your back with essential steps to make sure you and your new leafy friend start off on the right root.

1. Assess Your Light (Yes, Again)
Let’s be honest—you should have done this before buying the plant, but no judgment. Knowing your space’s light conditions is crucial to keeping your plant alive and thriving.

  • Bright, direct light? Think south-facing windows.
  • Low, indirect light? That cozy corner you work from might qualify.

The point is: like any good relationship, compatibility matters. Your plant can’t tell you it’s unhappy—unless you count the dramatic leaf drop.

2. Finger Your Plant (We Said What We Said)
It’s time to get comfortable with checking moisture levels. Stick your finger into the soil about 2–3" deep:

  • Dry? Water thoroughly.
  • Moist? Let it be for now.

This will be your regular routine, and yes, it’s serious plant parenting. If you're unsure about watering frequency, check the plant's product page for its care specifics.

3. To Repot or Not to Repot?
If you already have a pot that’s 1–2 inches larger than the nursery pot, you’re good to repot now—especially if roots are poking out the top or bottom. (Terracotta gets bonus points for breathability.)

4. Place Your Plant & Monitor
Circle back to Step 1 and place your plant where the light matches its vibe. Over the next week, keep an eye on how it responds. Yellowing, crispy edges, or leaning can be signs it needs a new location. Don’t be afraid to play musical chairs with your greenery.

That’s it! You’re officially a plant parent. And while your thumb might not literally start glowing, with these seven steps, you’re definitely well on your way to pro status.
